• Founded in 1934, first box-factory in Dublin
• 1971: First acquisition in UK
• 1986: Acquisition Container Corporation of America
• 1994: Acquisition of the Branche Papier Bois St Gobain, with establishments in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium
• 1995: Entry in Asia through a joint venture in China
• 1998: JSG acquires Stone Container Corporation establishing the greatest producer of paper and cardboard in the world (SSCC).
• 1999: Smurfit Europe reorganization in a 3 divisions structured (Corrugated, Paper and Special Products)
• 2000: Acquisition of Nettingsdorfer group and of Neopac
• 2002: Acquisizione da parte di MDP
• 2003: Cessione SSCC Nord America ed acquisizione SSCC Europa
• 2005: JSG and Kappa Packaging merged to become the Smurfit Kappa Group. This merger was finalized by the end of 2005. The group is owned by Madison Dearborn Partners, by Cinven Limited and CVC Capital Partners and by management.
